The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an order extending its permission to use old pre-printed packaging material for tea packages. This order was issued on 12th April, 2023.
Prior to the present order, there was a 3 months’ extension permitted by FSSAI.
However, the FSSAI has received representations from various Tea Estates and the Indian Tea Association seeking 6 months’ extension in the cases of 2nd permission to use non-retail pre-printed bulk tea packages.
Moreover, the Tea Board has also stated that the period January – February are the off season months for the tea industry where there is no production. Hence there will be no utilization of these packaging materials during this period.
As a consequence of these facts, the FSSAI has decided to grant time extension of 6 months for 2nd permission to Tea Manufacturing FBOs/Estates to use non retail bulk tea packages.
The Tea estates/Tea Manufacturing FBOs who have already been granted approval letters for utilization of pre-printed packaging material for a period of 3 months may be read as extension for 6 months from the date of issuance of the approval letter.
