Transformative Goals: IIT Madras Aims for AI Excellence

Indian Institute of Technology Madras is on a mission to become one of the top 20 schools worldwide focused on AI. They want to emphasize Responsible AI and help the government make policies with societal impact. To make this vision a reality, the school received a generous donation of 110 crore from Sunil Wadhwani, an esteemed alumnus and Co-founder of IGATE and Mastech Digital. This Notification was published on 31.01.2024.

An Agreement was signed between Sunil Wadhwani and The Director of IIT Madras, in front of faculty, students, alumni, and researchers. The newly established Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI aims to be a global leader in AI education. It will not only conduct advanced research but also advise the government on AI-related policies. The Director of IIT Madras, stressed the importance of this initiative, highlighting the need for a dedicated school in the age of AI-driven technology. Sunil Wadhwani expressed his commitment to supporting AI for social good and his pride in giving back to his alma mater. He believes India has the potential to excel in AI and hopes this contribution will help realize that potential. Through his family foundation, Wadhwani Impact Trust, Sunil Wadhwani has been supporting social welfare and scientific research. This partnership between Sunil Wadhwani and IIT Madras marks a significant step forward in India’s AI education and research landscape.
