The T.N Government has introduced restrictions on forced medical procedures, selective reassignment surgery, sterilization and hormonal therapy

The Department of Health and Family Welfare of Tamil Nadu (T.N) through order dated 13 August, 2021 has introduced restrictions on forced medical procedures, selective reassignment surgery, sterilization or hormonal therapy. The Madras High Court in the judgement of the National Legal Service Authority case has observed that no one shall be forced to undergo these procedures as a requirement for legal recognition of their gender identity.

In pursuance of this judgement, the T.N government has banned sex reassignment surgeries on intersex infants and children other than in life threatening situations.
