Tamil Nadu PCB issues guidelines for control of pollution and enforcement of environmental norms for individual establishments

The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has issued guidelines and options for control of pollution and enforcement of environmental laws with particular focus on the common environmental issues symptomatic to various establishments.

Key highlights from the guidelines:

  • A restaurant with a minimum seating capacity of 36 shall install ETP( Effluent treatment plant) and the treated effluent shall meet the existing environmental standards and shall install a water meter to record the daily consumption of water and separate electromagnetic flow meter at the inlet and outlet of the effluent treatment plant to record actual flow on a daily basis.
  • For groundwater extraction, necessary permission must be obtained from concerned authorities and the groundwater extraction pits/points should have required meters for recording flow/quality of water and the same shall be within the limit.
  • Application of solar energy in various areas such as illumination, water heating should be promoted and the use of inverters instead of diesel generator sets shall be encouraged.
  • Marriage halls generating waste of more than 100kg falls under the category of bulk waste generator and shall ensure compliance with the provision of solid waste management rules, 2016.
  • All hotels and restaurants shall within one year from the date of this notification shall ensure the segregation of waste at source and facilitate collection of segregated waste in separate streams.
