India Emerges as Global Leader in Disaster Warning

India’s internationally recognized Tsunami Early Warning System was showcased as a cornerstone of the nation’s disaster preparedness strategy. The Minister also highlighted ongoing collaborations with UNESCO and the Tsunami Ready Initiative, which aims to enhance community resilience in vulnerable regions. The recognition of 24 Indian communities under this program demonstrates a strong community-centric approach.

Three New Portals Launched In The Power Sector

The launch of the three online portals; DRIPS, PROMPT, and JAL VIDYUT DPR is intended to enable transparent, coordinated, and effective working of the power sector in the country. Speaking at the launch, the Minister emphasized the crucial role of electricity in driving India’s economic growth and highlighted the urgent need for timely completion of ongoing thermal power projects.

Draft Disaster Management (Amendment) Act, 2024

The government has introduced a bill to amend the Disaster Management Act, 2005. The proposed amendments aim to enhance disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts across the country. This Bill was published for the notice of the general public on August 1, 2024.

Rights of Persons with Disabilities (Amendment) Rules, 2024

These amendments aim to improve the accessibility of essential services for persons with disabilities in India. Police stations will be more accessible, promoting equal access to the justice system for people with disabilities. Accessibility features in prisons will enhance the lives of inmates with disabilities. Disaster mitigation centers will be better equipped to assist persons with disabilities during emergencies.
