SOP for Recycling of Waste Tyre Scrap for the recovery of Tyre Pyrolysis Oil, Pyro Gas and Char in Tyre Pyrolysis Oil (TPO) Units

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) by its decision dated 06-01-2020 has issued a series of directives aimed at regulating Tyre Pyrolysis Oil (TPO) Units. Based on this order the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has now issued an SOP for Recycling of Waste Tyre Scrap for the recovery of Tyre Pyrolysis Oil, Pyro Gas and Char in Tyre Pyrolysis Oil (TPO) Units. This SOP was issued on January 16, 2024.

The NGT’s order dated 25.10.2021 further emphasized the need for a Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) covering critical aspects such as siting criteria, threshold limit of a plant, carrying capacity, standards for effluents, emissions, hazardous waste, safety measures, and protection of public health. In response, and in consultation with expert members from National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi), the existing SoP was revised concerning the Recycling of Waste Tyre Scrap for the recovery of Tyre Pyrolysis Oil, Pyro Gas, and Char in Tyre Pyrolysis Oil (TPO) Units.

The NGT’s intervention underscores the commitment to environmental protection and public health, ensuring that the Tyre Pyrolysis industry adheres to stringent norms and adopts practices that minimize adverse impacts on the environment and ensure the safety of both workers and the surrounding communities.
