In a groundbreaking collaboration between the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI), the ‘Garbhini-GA2’ AI model has been developed under the ‘Interdisciplinary Group for Advanced Research on Birth Outcomes – DBT India Initiative’ (GARBH-Ini) program. This innovative model marks a significant advancement in pregnancy care by accurately determining the gestational age (GA) of foetuses during the second and third trimesters, specifically tailored to the Indian population. This Notification was published on 26.02.2024.
Traditional methods relying on Western population data often lead to inaccuracies in late-trimester GA estimation for Indian women. However, Garbhini-GA2 reduces error rates significantly, thereby enhancing the care provided by obstetricians and neonatologists and potentially lowering maternal and infant mortality rates in India. This research underscores IIT Madras in commitment to addressing healthcare challenges at the grassroots level. The model, developed using genetic algorithm-based techniques and validated in diverse Indian cohorts, promises improved precision in pregnancy care, ultimately translating into better outcomes for mothers and babies nationwide. This collaborative effort, supported by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and various medical institutions, exemplifies the integration of advanced data science with clinical expertise, paving the way for transformative advancements in maternal and child health.
