The Reserve Bank of India on 8th June 2021 has directed banks to continue preserving the CCTV recordings of operations at bank branches and currency chests for the period from November 08, 2016 to December 30, 2016, until further instructions, to facilitate coordinated and effective action by the enforcement agencies in dealing with matters relating to illegal accumulation of new currency notes.
The Central Government earlier made am surprise announcement of demonetising the then circulating Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes, thereby rendering them invalid from midnight. Huge crowds were witnessed at bank branches across the country for exchanging or depositing the demonetised currency and based on various inputs, the investigative agencies also started probing matters relating to illegal accumulation of new currency notes.
Therefore in order to continue the investigations pending with law enforcement agencies and proceedings pending at various courts, RBI has advised all the banks to preserve the CCTV recordings of operations at bank branches and currency chests for the period from November 08, 2016, to December 30, 2016, in a proper way, till further orders.
