The National Medical Commission (NMC) has launched the National Medical Register (NMR) portal for registration of all MBBS doctors eligible to practice in India. The NMC has published a public notice issued by the Ethics & Medical Registration Board (EMRB) regarding commencement of registration of Registered Medical Practitioners (RMPs) on NMR Portal. This public notice was issued on August 30, 2024.

It mat be recalled that the National Medical Register portal was inaugurated on August 23, 2024, by Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare and Chemical and Fertilizers.

What is the National Medical Register (NMR)?

The NMR is an electronic database mandated by the NMC Act, 2019. It will serve as a central repository for all registered allopathic (MBBS) doctors in India. This initiative aims to:

  1. Maintain a comprehensive and dynamic database of doctors.
  2. Ensure the authenticity of doctors through Aadhaar ID linkage.
  3. Streamline the registration process for doctors.
  4. Improve transparency and accountability in the medical profession.

Key Features of the NMR Portal

Simple online registration: The NMR portal offers a user-friendly online process for doctors to register.

Interlinked database: Medical colleges, institutions, and State Medical Councils are integrated with the NMR portal for seamless data sharing.

Public and private access: Certain information, such as doctor names and qualifications, will be publicly accessible. More sensitive data will be restricted for authorized users like NMC, State Medical Councils, medical institutions, and National Board of Examinations (NBE).

Registration Process for Doctors

Existing MBBS doctors registered with the Indian Medical Register (IMR) need to re-register on the NMR portal.

To enroll on the portal, the RMP shall have documents including scanned copies of MBBS degree certificate, initial registration certificate from the State Medical Council/ Medical Council of India, and Aadhaar number.

Currently, registration allows for only the basic qualification (MBBS degree). Registration for additional qualifications will be available soon.
