PM Surya Ghar: A Solar Revolution in India

The Prime Minister’s Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, aimed at providing free solar power to one crore Indian households, is rapidly transforming the country’s energy landscape. Launched in February 2024, this ambitious scheme has already made significant strides towards its goal. A press release on the progress of this scheme was issued on December 5, 2024.

Key Highlights of the Scheme

The government offers a generous subsidy of up to 40% to households, making rooftop solar installations more affordable. Additionally, collateral-free loans at low-interest rates are available to facilitate the adoption of solar power.

The scheme has witnessed remarkable progress, with over 6.3 lakh installations completed in just nine months. The monthly installation rate has surged tenfold compared to pre-scheme levels.

The widespread adoption of solar power under this scheme is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions and contribute to India’s climate goals.

The scheme is projected to save the government ₹75,000 crore annually in electricity costs. Moreover, it will create numerous jobs in the solar energy sector, boosting economic growth.

Model Solar Village Initiative

The government has also launched the “Model Solar Village” initiative, aiming to establish one such village in each district. These villages will serve as examples of sustainable energy practices and community empowerment.

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is poised to revolutionize India’s energy landscape. By promoting the adoption of solar power, the scheme will empower millions of households, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and contribute to a cleaner and greener future for the nation.
