Operational Guidelines for Model Solar Villages

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has issued operational guidelines for the implementation of “Model Solar Village” component under the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. An office memorandum (OM) on the operational guidelines was issued on August 9, 2024.

The concept of Model Solar Villages is pivotal in achieving a decentralized and sustainable energy landscape. By focusing on entire villages as units for solar power adoption, the government aims to create self-sufficient energy communities. This approach not only reduces reliance on the grid but also fosters a sense of ownership and participation among villagers.

The operational guidelines provide a roadmap for states and union territories to implement the scheme effectively. They outline the eligibility criteria for villages, the process of selecting beneficiaries, the technical specifications for solar installations, and the financial mechanisms for supporting the initiative. Additionally, the guidelines emphasize the importance of capacity building and awareness creation among villagers.

Successful implementation of Model Solar Villages will not only contribute to India’s renewable energy targets but also improve the lives of rural communities by providing access to clean and affordable electricity.
