NPPA Extends Ceiling Prices for Orthopaedic Knee Implants

The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has announced an extension of the ceiling prices for Orthopaedic Knee Implants for Knee Replacement Systems. This notfication was issued on September 10, 2024, and the extension will remain in effect until September 15, 2025, unless revised earlier.

The NPPA has issued a notification to continue the current ceiling prices for primary and secondary knee replacement systems.

What are Knee Replacement Systems?

A primary knee replacement is a first-time joint replacement, while a secondary knee replacement is a revision of a primary replacement. An orthopedic knee implant is a medical device that replaces parts of a damaged or worn-out knee joint. The implant is made of metal, plastic, or ceramic and is called a prosthesis. The surgery to replace the knee joint is called a knee replacement.

It may be recalled that NPPA had first fixed the ceiling prices of the Orthopaedic Knee Implants for Knee Replacement Systems on August 16, 2017. Subsequently, it has revised this order through orders dated August 13, 2018, August 13, 2019, August 14, 2020, September 15, 2020, September 10, 2021, September 15, 2022 and September 15, 2023.

The specific ceiling prices for primary and secondary knee replacement systems will remain unchanged for another year, i.e. from September 16, 2024 to September 15, 2025, or until the next revision.

This extension aims to provide stability and affordability for patients requiring knee replacement surgery.
