The National Power Committee (NPC), in consultation with Regional Power Committees (RPCs), has approved a Uniform Protection Protocol for users of the Indian Grid. This aims to enhance the reliability, security, and stability of the country’s power system. A press release on this launch was issued on November 16, 2024.
Key Features of the Uniform Protection Protocol
The Protocol applies to all Regional entities, State/Central/Private Generating Companies/ Generating Stations, SLDCs, RLDCs, CTU, STUs, Transmission Licensees and RPCs, connected to the grid at or above 220 kV (132 kV for the North-Eastern Region).
The protocol addresses protection requirements for various power system components, including thermal and hydro power plants, renewable energy sources, battery energy storage systems, substations, transmission lines, and HVDC terminals.
The protocol mandates regular monitoring of protection system performance, analysis of power system disturbances, and periodic audits to ensure compliance with standards and best practices. It also requires monthly submission of protection performance indices by users/entities to RPCs and RLDCs. Non-compliance is reported to RPCs, and unresolved violations are escalated to the Commission for suitable directions.
