The National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted renewal of MBBS seats for the academic year 2024-25 to all medical colleges with valid Letters of Permission (LoP). However, the decision comes with a caveat for institutions that have not yet paid the penalty imposed on them for deficiencies identified during the annual declaration process. A public notice on these conditions was issued on August 16, 2024.
The NMC had earlier mandated medical colleges to submit annual declarations on the NMC portal as required by the National Medical Commission Act, 2019. Based on the information provided, the commission assessed the institutions and levied penalties on those found to be deficient. While most colleges have complied, some have yet to pay the fines.
To avoid disrupting the ongoing MBBS admissions process, the NMC has allowed renewal of seats for this academic year, i.e. 2024-2025. However, it has warned that failure to deposit the penalty will result in a reduction of MBBS seats for the academic year 2025-26. The commission has also released the list of allocated MBBS seats for each medical college for the current academic year.
The NMC has indicated that separate guidelines will be issued for the establishment of new medical colleges and the increase of seats in existing institutions.
