NMC Issues Advisory for Safe Work Environment in Medical Colleges

In light of the increasing incidents of violence against medical professionals, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a stringent advisory to all medical colleges and institutions across the country. The advisory mandates the creation of a secure work environment for all staff, including faculty, students, and resident doctors. This advisory was issued on August 13, 2024.

The advisory emphasizes the importance of developing comprehensive safety policies encompassing the entire campus, including OPDs, wards, casualty areas, hostels, and residential quarters. Adequate lighting, CCTV surveillance, and robust security measures are deemed essential for ensuring the safety of all staff members.

Medical colleges are required to investigate incidents of violence promptly and lodge FIRs with the police. A detailed report of the actions taken must be submitted to the NMC within 48 hours of the incident.

The NMC’s directive comes as a crucial step towards safeguarding the well-being of healthcare professionals who often face challenging and stressful working conditions.
