New Guidelines for Rooftop Solar Subsidies for Homes Announced

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has released guidelines for providing financial assistance to residential consumers under the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. This initiative aims to empower households to generate their own clean electricity by installing rooftop solar panels. These guidelines were issued on June 7, 2024 and published in July 2024.

The scheme offers financial support in terms of Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to eligible homeowners for installing grid-connected rooftop solar systems. Eligible homeowners can submit applications through the PM Surya Ghar National Portal. Consumers can choose their own vendors from a pool of registered vendors on the portal.

The portal provides resources to help consumers make informed decisions about system design and vendor selection. Minimum technical specifications for rooftop solar systems are outlined to ensure quality and performance.

The scheme is open until March 31, 2027.

Eligibility

For the purpose of CFA, residential RTS plant would be the grid connected solar power system tagged to a particular residential power connection of the local DISCOM. It will only include installations on a roof, terrace, balcony or on top of elevated structures.

Special RTS installations such as Building Integrated PV (BiPV) systems shall also be considered eligible for CFA support.

Installations under metering mechanisms such as Group Net Metering and Virtual Net Metering shall be eligible for CFA if the installations are on any roof/ terrace/ balcony or on top of elevated structures or as BiPV and the metering arrangement is approved by the DISCOM.

  1. Visit the PM Surya Ghar National Portal.
  2. Check eligibility based on your consumer account number.
  3. Choose a registered vendor and finalize system design and financial terms.
  4. Submit your application through the portal.

Consumers are encouraged to explore the resources available on the portal to understand the benefits and technical aspects of rooftop solar installations.

This initiative is expected to encourage a significant shift towards rooftop solar power generation in India, promoting energy independence and sustainability for homeowners.
