The Ministry of Labour and Employment on August 2nd 2024 has extended the public utility service status for industries involved in the manufacturing of alumina and aluminium, as well as the mining of bauxite. This move comes as part of an effort to ensure uninterrupted service and stability in these critical sectors.
The Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, designates certain industries as PUBLIC UTILITY SERVICES to prevent disruptions that could affect the general public. The manufacturing of alumina and aluminium, along with bauxite mining, falls under this designation, meaning these sectors are crucial to public welfare.
Previously, the Central Government had declared these industries as public utility services for a six-month period starting February 4, 2024. This status was confirmed through a notification issued on February 2, 2024 (S.O. 422(E)).
Extension of Status
Given the ongoing significance of these industries, the government has decided to extend their public utility service status for an additional six months. The decision underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining stability and preventing potential disruptions in these essential sectors.
Declaring these industries as public utility services helps ensure that any industrial disputes or labor issues do not lead to interruptions in their operations. Alumina and aluminium are vital materials used in a variety of applications, including manufacturing and construction. Similarly, bauxite is the primary ore for aluminium production. Any disruption in these industries could have far-reaching effects on other sectors and the economy at large.
This extension will be in effect from August 4, 2024.
