The National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced the nationwide inauguration of Tobacco Cessation Centers (TCCs) in all medical colleges across India. A public notice on this inauguration was issued on September 18, 2024.
The virtual inauguration ceremony will be held on September 24, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. The ceremony will be presided over by the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare.
It may be recalled that the NMC had issued a public notice of its intension to establish Tobacco Cessation Centers (TCCs) in all medical colleges across India. This notice was issued on August 16, 2024.
This initiative aligns with the Tobacco Free Youth Campaign 2.0, launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW). The MoHFW released Operational Guidelines on May 31, 2024 for establishing TCCs on World No Tobacco Day.
Therefore, in the light of this launch, medical colleges are instructed to:
- Establish TCCs as per the guidelines.
- Display the official TCC inauguration plaque.
- Facilitate participation in the virtual inauguration ceremony.
This nationwide launch signifies a significant step towards promoting tobacco cessation in India. TCCs within medical colleges will provide accessible support and resources to help individuals quit tobacco use.
