Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy inaugurated a two-day National Conference on “Energy Transition in India – Road Travelled and Opportunities Ahead”. This event was held on December 1, 2023 in Gandhinagar.
The event was organized as a part of the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024. It brought together more than 250 Indian and foreign representatives from the power and renewable energy sector.
The conference delved into the critical aspects of energy transition, focusing on scaling up renewable energy generation and consumption. The discussions addressed challenges related to grid integration, financing tools, and the development of supporting infrastructure.
In his address, the Union Minister emphasized the ambitious vision of promoting clean energy and facilitating the energy transition in India. He reiterated India’s commitment to reducing the emission intensity of its GDP by 45 percent by 2030 compared to the 2005 level. The minister highlighted the goal of reaching 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030, with a target of at least 50 percent renewable energy-based capacity in terms of installed capacity.
Addressing the media on the sidelines of the conference, the Minister urged developed countries to prioritize reducing carbon emissions rather than scrutinizing how these emissions are produced. He emphasized that 80 percent of the carbon emission burden lies with developed countries, which account for only one-third of the world’s population.
The Minister of Finance and Energy of the Gujarat government highlighted Gujarat’s achievements, including being the first state in the country to establish a separate department for Climate Change. This move facilitated measures to achieve sustainability, energy transition, and net-zero goals.
The Gujarat State Minister lauded Gujarat for holding the top position in the country in terms of installed wind power capacity, contributing 25 percent to the nation’s total. Additionally, he also stated that the state leads in rooftop solar capacity, accounting for 26 percent of India’s total rooftop solar capacity. The policies on renewable energy in Gujarat provide incentives for the development of sustainable energy sources, reflecting the state’s commitment to a green and energy-efficient future.
