National Commission for Indian System of Medicine Introduces New Regulations for Examinations

The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine has introduced the “National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (National Examinations for Indian System of Medicine) Regulations, 2023.” These regulations have come into force from December 20, 2023.

The regulations define aspects related to examinations, verification procedures, and eligibility criteria for the Indian System of Medicine. The following are some key highlights pf the regulations:

Examination Cell Establishment

The regulations establish an Examination Cell within the Commission, comprising a Controller of Examination and two Deputy Controllers for the Boards of Ayurveda and Unani, Siddha, and Sowa-Rigpa. The Examination Cell is mandated to conduct specified tests or examinations in accordance with the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine Act, 2020.

Verification of Admissions

The Examination Cell is responsible in verifying details of students admitted to undergraduate and postgraduate courses. This includes ensuring that the number of students admitted aligns with the permitted seats for the academic year, adherence to counseling processes, and verification of candidates’ details through designated authorities and national entrance test results.

Unique Ayush Identity Document

Admitted undergraduate students of Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani will be allotted a unique Ayush identity document. The document will include the year of admission, stream abbreviation, institutional identity document, state or union territory code, and a serial number.

National Exit Test

The National Exit Test for Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and Sowa-Rigpa disciplines will be conducted twice a year. The test aims to assess clinical competency, medical ethics understanding, and the ability to handle medico-legal cases. Passing the National Exit Test is a prerequisite for enrollment in the State or National Register as a registered medical practitioner.

All-India Ayush Post-Graduate Entrance Test

The regulations include provisions for the All India Ayush Post-Graduate Entrance Test, specifying eligibility criteria, examination details, and the process for counseling and admissions.

National Teachers’ Eligibility Test

A National Teachers’ Eligibility Test is mandated for individuals seeking teaching positions in Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and Sowa-Rigpa disciplines. The test assesses teaching aptitude, communication skills, classroom management, and other relevant skills.

National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test – Pre-Ayurveda and Pre-Tib

The regulations introduce entrance tests for Pre-Ayurveda and Pre-Tib programs, including eligibility criteria, examination details, and counseling procedures.

These regulations aim to standardize and streamline the examination and admission processes within the Indian System of Medicine, ensuring a robust framework for education and practice in the field.
