The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare vide circular dated 2nd November, 2021 has appointed the 2nd of November, 2021, as the day on which the provision of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 governing Genetically modified foods, organic foods, functional foods, proprietary foods, etc. shall come into force. No person shall manufacture, distribute, sell or import any novel food, genetically modified articles of food which the Central Government may notify.
“Genetically engineered or modified food” shall mean food and food ingredients composed of or containing genetically modified or engineered organisms obtained through modern biotechnology, or food and food ingredients produced from but not containing genetically modified or engineered organisms obtained through modern biotechnology.
