MoD & FSSAI sign MoU Promoting Millets in Armed Forces

In a remarkable move aimed at promoting healthy eating habits and the consumption of millets, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 13th July, 2023. A press release was issued on this event on the same day.

The signing took place in the presence of the Minister of Defence, and Union Health Minister.

The signing of the MoU signifies a crucial step towards ensuring the availability of safe and nutritious food for armed forces personnel. The Director General (Supplies and Transport), represented the Ministry of Defence (MoD), while the CEO of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), signed on behalf of the organization.

The primary objective of the MoU is to raise awareness about the nutritional benefits of incorporating diverse diets and millet-based food products among armed forces personnel. As part of this collaboration, millet-based menus will be introduced in messes, canteens, and other food outlets under the Ministry of Defence. Furthermore, the MoU will facilitate training for food handlers and chefs in these establishments, ensuring adherence to food safety and hygiene standards outlined in the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006.

The partnership between the MoD and FSSAI reflects a shared commitment to the health and well-being of the armed forces. By promoting the consumption of millets, known for their nutritional value, the initiative aims to support the personnel’s strength and resilience in serving the nation.

To further assist in this endeavor, both ministers unveiled a book titled ‘Healthy Recipes for Defence.’ Developed by the FSSAI, the book offers a wide range of millet-based dishes. It will serve as a valuable resource for the various canteens and food outlets operating under the Ministry of Defence. Considering the challenging terrains and diverse climatic conditions often faced by defence personnel, incorporating dietary variety assumes great significance. Millets, with their nutritional value, contribute to a well-balanced and diverse diet, thus benefiting the armed forces.

The signing ceremony witnessed the presence of Chief of Defence Staff & Secretary, Dept of Military Affairs, Defence Secretary, Union Health Secretary, CEO of FSSAI, and several senior officials from the MoD and MoHFW.
