Ministry of Textile extends the validity of order issued under the Jute Packaging Materials (Compulsory Use in Packaging Commodities) Act 1987.

The Ministry of Textile on 16th September 2022, has extended the validity of order issued under the Jute Packaging Materials (Compulsory Use in Packaging Commodities) Act 1987 upto 31 st December, 2022 or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

As per the earlier order, the ministry directed the commodities such as food grains and sugar to be packed in jute packaging material for supply or distribution. Initially ten per cent. of the indents for foodgrains would be placed through reverse auction on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal.

100% of the production of the foodgrains and 20% of the production of sugar shall be packed in jute packaging material manufactured in India from raw jute produced in India. The Procurement of jute bags for packing of foodgrains through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal shall be initiated on trial basis.
