Ministry of Defence Publishes Solid Waste Management Bye-laws For Several Cantonment Boards

The Ministry of Defence has introduced new bye-laws to improve solid waste management practices within its jurisdiction. These bye-laws aim to promote segregation of waste at source, efficient collection, and proper disposal.

These bye laws have been notified for the following cantonments:

  1. Fatehgarh, Uttar Pradesh
  2. Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh
  3. Meerut, Uttar Pradesh
  4. Clement, Uttarakhand
  5. Chakrata, Uttarakhand
  6. Ranikhet, Uttarrakhand

Key Provisions of the Bye-Laws

All waste generators, including households, commercial establishments, and institutions, are required to segregate waste into three categories: biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and hazardous waste.

The Cantonment Boards will implement a door-to-door collection system to collect segregated waste from households and commercial establishments.

Biodegradable waste will be processed through composting or bio-methanation, while non-biodegradable waste will be sent to recycling facilities. Hazardous waste will be disposed of in accordance with environmental regulations.

The Boards will conduct awareness campaigns to educate residents about the importance of waste segregation and proper disposal.

The bye-laws prescribe penalties for non-compliance with the provisions, including littering, improper waste disposal, and failure to segregate waste.

The implementation of these bye-laws is expected to significantly improve the cleanliness and environmental health of these Cantonments. By promoting sustainable waste management practices, the Boards aim to create a cleaner and greener future for the community.
