Mandatory Tracking for Non-Toxic Cylinders

The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) has issued an order concerning high-pressure cylinders used for non-toxic and non-flammable gases. This order was dated June 5, 2024.

This order follows a meeting held on June 3, 2024, between DPIIT, the All India Industrial Gases Manufacturers Association (AIIGMA), and various stakeholders. Discussions focused on issues related to the Gas Cylinder Rules, 2016, and their implementation.

The order mandates that all manufacturers, importers, fillers, and traders of gas cylinders to comply with Rule 6 of the Gas Cylinder Rules, 2016. This rule specifies various marking on cylinders. The order specifically references the requirement that each cylinder to be marked with a barcode or QR code for tracking purposes.

All the high pressure cylinders and Cryogenic containers used for filling of Non-Toxic, Non-Flammable Gases and Liquids shall have permanent and tamper proof marking in form of Bar Code or RFID or QR code or any means of electronic identification number at conspicuous place on cylinders and containers.

Rule 6 (2) (c) of Gas Cylinder Rules, 2016

Importance of Tracking

The PESO emphasizes the importance of implementing barcode/ QR code tracking in the interest of public safety. This system will allow for better monitoring and management of gas cylinders, potentially enhancing safety measures.

The order applies to all entities involved in the lifecycle of high-pressure cylinders used for non-toxic and non-flammable gases, including:

  1. Manufacturers,
  2. Importers,
  3. Fillers and
  4. Traders

Implementing barcode/ QR code tracking is expected to improve gas cylinder safety by enabling enhanced tracking and monitoring, improved inventory management and potential identification of safety hazards.
