The Karnataka Government within its Gazette published a notification dated 29th January, 2024, pertaining to the amendment of the Karnataka Gram Swaraj and Panchayat Raj Act, 1993 which shall be renamed as Karnataka Gram Swaraj and Panchayat Raj (Amendment) Act, 2023.
The essence of the notification is the amendment made to section 160 of the Karnataka Gram Swaraj and Panchayat Raj Act, 1993 which involves the insertion of specific words, brackets, and punctuation before the word “Chikkamagalur.” The amendment states that before the word “Chikkamagalur,” the words “Shivamogga (excluding Bhadravati, Shivamogga and Shikaripura Taluks)” shall be inserted. This amendment is made with an intent of adding the specified geographical areas to the provision.
In consonance with the Amendment the Karnataka Gram Swaraj and Panchayat Raj (Amendment) Ordinance, 2023 has been repealed and any actions or provisions under it are now considered to have been done or taken under the Principal Act as amended by the subsequent Act.
