Karnataka Government Amends Tax Exemption for Electric Vehicles

The  Karnataka Government issued a notification, announcing an amendment to The Karnataka Motor Vehicles Taxation Act 1957 regarding tax exemption for electric vehicles. 

The notification outlines the exemption from taxes for all electric non-transport and transport vehicles, including e-rickshaws and e-carts, except for specific categories such as motor cars, jeeps, omni buses, and private service vehicles run on electricity with a cost exceeding Rs. 25.00 Lakhs. This exemption is in line with the government’s opinion that it is necessary in the public interest to do so. 

In essence, the document signifies a significant policy change in the taxation of electric vehicles in Karnataka. It reflects the government’s proactive stance to promote the use of electric vehicles by providing tax exemptions to encourage their adoption. The exemption covers a wide range of electric vehicles, including non-transport and transport vehicles, e-rickshaws, and e-carts, with the exception of certain high-cost vehicles.
