IRDAI directs insurers to settle claims for treatment in a make-shift or temporary hospital

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority vide its circular dated 16th July 2020 has issued guidelines on the settlement of claims for treatment at ‘make-shift or temporary hospitals’ as permitted by the government.

In view of increase in number of COVID-19 cases, several state governments have set up make-shift or temporary hospital and if a policyholder is diagnosed as COVID-19 positive and admitted into any such make-shift or temporary hospital on the advice of a medical practitioner or appropriate government authorities, the treatment costs shall be settled by insurers.

Further if a network provider has set up any such make-shift or temporary hospital, such make-shift or temporary hospital shall be regarded as the extension of the network provider and a cashless facility shall be made available.
