The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has introduced several measures to protect senior citizens from exorbitant health insurance premium hikes. One of the most significant changes is the cap on premium increases, ensuring that health insurance premiums for senior citizens cannot be raised by more than 10% in a year. Additionally, if insurers wish to increase premiums beyond this limit, they must first seek approval from IRDAI.

Another major relief for senior citizens is the directive that insurers cannot withdraw individual health insurance plans specifically designed for them. This regulation prevents insurance companies from discontinuing essential policies that cater to the unique healthcare needs of the elderly.
Previously, insurers could withdraw products, forcing policyholders to seek alternative plans that might come with higher premiums or lesser benefits. Common Hospital Network: Standardising Healthcare Costs
In a bid to standardise hospitalisation expenses and streamline the claims process, IRDAI has urged insurers to adopt a common empanelment of hospitals. This initiative aims to create a unified hospital network, ensuring that policyholders receive consistent pricing and standardised treatment packages across hospitals.
For senior citizens, this means greater transparency in medical billing and a reduction in out-of-pocket expenses. Often, different hospitals charge varied rates for the same treatments, making it difficult for insured individuals to plan their medical expenses. Dedicated Grievance Redressal: Addressing Senior Citizens’ Concerns
Another critical mandate by IRDAI is the establishment of a dedicated grievance redressal system for senior citizens. Insurers are now required to set up specialised grievance cells to address concerns related to policy coverage, claim settlements, and premium hikes.
