India’s 100-day Intensified TB-Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, launched on December 7, 2024, by Union Health Minister Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, has achieved progress, with over 5.1 lakh TB notifications recorded nationwide. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare issued this press release on February 22, 2025.
The campaign’s innovative strategy, focused on early detection through X-ray screening and door-to-door outreach, has proven highly effective.
A key element of the campaign is the use of ultraportable hand-held X-ray devices to screen high-risk populations, including diabetics, smokers, alcoholics, people living with HIV, and household contacts of TB patients. This targeted approach has led to the identification of numerous asymptomatic TB cases, crucial for curbing transmission.
Key Achievements
- Over 3.5 lakh TB patients notified: Across 455 intervention districts.
- More than 10 crore vulnerable individuals screened: Through accelerated case detection efforts.
- 2.4 lakh patients notified from public health institutions: And 1.1 lakh from private healthcare facilities.
- Over 10 lakh Ni-kshay Shivirs organized: To extend TB service reach.
- 836 Ni-kshay Vahans deployed: To reach remote areas.
- Over 38 lakh chest x-rays conducted: Including asymptomatic individuals.
- Over 2.4 lakh Ni-kshay Mitras registered: And over 2.3 lakh food baskets distributed.
The campaign’s success is attributed to a “whole-of-government approach,” with active involvement from various ministries and parliamentarians. Union Health Minister Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda has held meetings with Chief Ministers and senior officials to ensure seamless coordination and implementation.
Community Participation and Support
Building on the “Jan Bhagidaari” approach, the campaign emphasizes community participation. Ni-kshay Shapaths and Ni-kshay Mitras are encouraging individuals and organizations to support TB patients through nutritional, psychosocial, and vocational assistance.
Progress Towards TB Elimination
India’s commitment to TB elimination is evident in its achievements. In 2024, over 26 lakh TB patients were notified, closing the gap between estimated incidence and reported cases. Notably, over 36% of notifications came from the private sector, reflecting the success of progressive policies.
The 100-day campaign’s strategy of identifying asymptomatic TB cases is crucial for breaking transmission chains and reducing mortality. This initiative is accelerating progress towards India’s goal of eliminating TB.
