India’s Energy Sector Shows Robust Growth in “Energy Statistics India 2025” Report

The National Statistics Office (NSO), under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, has released its annual publication, “Energy Statistics India 2025,” revealing significant growth in India’s energy sector. The report provides a detailed overview of India’s energy reserves, capacity, production, consumption, and import/export across various energy commodities. A press release on this report was issued on March 29, 2025.

Key Highlights of the Report

Strong Energy Supply and Consumption Growth

India’s Total Primary Energy Supply (TPES) grew by 7.8% in FY 2023-24, reaching 903,158 Kilo Tonnes of Oil Equivalent (KToE), indicating a healthy economic expansion.

India’s total renewable energy potential stands at 2,109,655 Megawatts as of March 31, 2024. Wind power dominates, accounting for approximately 55% (1,163,856 Megawatts) of this potential, followed by solar energy (748,990 Megawatts) and large hydro (133,410 Megawatts). Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Karnataka collectively hold over half of India’s renewable energy potential.

The installed capacity for generating electricity from renewable resources has increased significantly, from 81,593 Megawatts in 2015 to 198,213 Megawatts in 2024, representing a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 10.36%.

Gross electricity generation from renewable resources has also seen substantial growth, rising from 205,608 GWh in FY 2014-15 to 370,320 GWh in FY 2023-24, with a CAGR of 6.76%.

India’s per capita energy consumption has risen from 14,682 Mega Joules/person in FY 2014-15 to 18,410 Mega Joules/person in FY 2023-24, indicating a CAGR of 2.55%.

Electricity transmission and distribution losses have decreased from approximately 23% in FY 2014-15 to around 17% in FY 2023-24, showing improved efficiency.

The industrial sector has witnessed the maximum expansion in energy consumption during FY 2023-24, increasing from 242,418 KToE in FY 2014-15 to 311,822 KToE in FY 2023-24.

Other sectors, including commercial and public services, residential, and agriculture and forestry, have also shown consistent growth.

New Energy Account Chapter

The 2025 publication introduces a new chapter on Energy Accounts, adhering to the System of Environmental Economic Accounting (SEEA) 2012 framework. This chapter includes Asset Accounts and Physical Supply and Use Tables for FY 2022-23 and FY 2023-24.

The “Energy Statistics India 2025” report provides valuable insights into the country’s energy landscape, highlighting its progress in both conventional and renewable energy sectors. The data underscores India’s commitment to sustainable energy growth and its efforts to meet the increasing energy demands of its expanding economy.
