India’s Commitment to Sustainable Mining Practices

The Indian government has taken measures towards sustainable mining practices, focusing on environmental conservation, social responsibility, and technological advancements. A press release on these initiatives was issued on December 2, 2024.

Key Initiatives

The adoption of advanced mining technologies like surface mining, continuous mining, and highwall/longwall mining has minimized environmental impact and improved efficiency.

By increasing the use of First Mile Connectivity (FMC) projects, the government aims to reduce the reliance on road transportation, thereby reducing carbon emissions and air pollution.

Coal mining companies are implementing energy-efficient measures, such as LED lighting, energy-efficient air conditioners, and efficient water usage, to reduce their carbon footprint.

The government is actively promoting the reclamation and restoration of mined-out areas. This includes developing eco-parks, mine tourism sites, and repurposing de-coaled areas for sustainable uses like renewable energy generation and agriculture.

Mine water is being utilized efficiently for various purposes, including domestic and irrigation use, industrial processes, and groundwater recharge. Overburden material is being processed and used for construction purposes, reducing the need for traditional sand mining and minimizing environmental impact.

Coal companies are undertaking extensive plantation drives and participating in green credit programs to offset their carbon footprint. The government is encouraging the adoption of renewable energy sources in the mining sector to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

The government is promoting scientific mine closure practices to minimize environmental damage and ensure the long-term sustainability of mining operations.
