The Indian Nursing Council (INC) has introduced a new postgraduate program focused on Geriatric Nursing. This initiative aims to address the growing needs of India’s aging population and ensure they receive specialized care.
This program is titled ‘Nurse Practitioner in Geriatric Nursing (NPGN) – Postgraduate Residency Program’.

The program seeks to equip nurses with advanced skills to provide comprehensive care for older adults in various settings. The INC believes this program will enhance the quality of care for older patients and their families in both primary and tertiary healthcare settings.
Program Structure
- Two-year residency program with an emphasis on clinical experience (85%).
- Curriculum includes core courses, advanced practice courses, clinical courses, and extensive practical training.
- Focus on competency-based learning, ensuring graduates can apply their knowledge effectively.
Program Outcomes
Through this course, registered nurses will be able to:
- become Nurse Practitioners in Geriatric Nursing (NPGNs).
- develop clinical expertise in geriatric assessment, treatment, and management of chronic and acute conditions.
