India Sanctioned Three Pilot Projects for Hydrogen in Steel Production

As part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the Union Government has sanctioned three pilot projects to explore the use of hydrogen in steel production. These projects aim to identify advanced technologies and assess the feasibility of incorporating green hydrogen into steelmaking processes. A press release on the launch of these projects was issued on October 18, 2024.

National Green Hydrogen Mission

Launched in January 2023 with an outlay of Rs. 19,744 crores, the National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to make India self-reliant in clean energy. It is expected to significantly reduce India’s dependence on fossil fuels and contribute to global efforts to combat climate change.

Objectives of the Pilot Projects

  1. Identify suitable technologies for utilizing green hydrogen in steelmaking.
  2. Demonstrate the safe and secure operation of green hydrogen-based steelmaking processes.
  3. Validate the technical feasibility and performance of these processes.
  4. Evaluate the economic viability of green hydrogen-based steel production.

Sanctioned Projects
