India Promotes Organ Donation Movement

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued letters urging governors of all states and union territories to create awareness among students of all universities. India is stepping up efforts to address the critical shortage of organs for transplants, urging citizens to consider organ donation.

Organ failure is a growing health concern in India. A significant gap exists between available donors and patients waiting for transplants.

The “Ayushman Bhava” initiative has launched a pledge campaign. Over 127,000 citizens have registered to donate organs since September 2023.

The ongoing “Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra” also promotes organ donation awareness.

Benefits of Donation

A single donor after brain death can save 8-9 lives through organ donation. Tissue donation can further improve the lives of many. Tissue donation is possible even after natural death.

How to Get Involved

Patients can register for organ transplants at any transplant hospital in India. This registration is free of cost. Citizens can pledge organ donation in the following ways:

NOTTO operates a toll-free helpline (1800-11-4770) for information.

The government is working to streamline organ donation and transplantation processes.

A Call to Universities

The Ministry also urges universities to spread awareness among students. Dispelling myths and encouraging youth participation is crucial.
