India Introduces Ecomark Certification Scheme to Promote Environment-Friendly Products

The Government of India has introduced the Ecomark Certification Scheme to encourage the production and consumption of environmentally friendly products. This scheme was introduced through the Ecomark Rules, 2024. These rules come into force from September 26, 2024.

The scheme aims to promote sustainable practices, reduce pollution, and conserve resources.

It may be recalled that the government had recently decided to rescind its Resolution on the Scheme for Labelling of Environment – Friendly Products, which was introduced in 1991. This decision was published on September 26, 2024. Hence, the new rules will replace the scheme of 1991.

Key Features of the Ecomark Scheme

Under these new rules, products eligible for Ecomark certification must meet specific criteria related to resource consumption, waste generation, emissions, and overall environmental impact.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) will assess products for compliance with Ecomark criteria, either directly or through verifiers.

Ecomark certification is valid for three years or until changes in Ecomark criteria for the product. Ecomark holders must submit annual reports to the CPCB detailing their product’s environmental performance and compliance with Ecomark standards.

The CPCB can suspend or cancel Ecomark certification if the holder provides false information or violates the scheme’s rules.
