The Ministry of Coal has announced a milestone in India’s coal production and dispatch, with December 2024 marking the highest monthly output ever recorded from captive and commercial mines. This achievement underscores the sector’s crucial role in driving energy security and economic growth. This press release was issued on January 2, 2024.
Between April 1 and December 31, 2024, total coal production from captive and commercial mines reached 131.05 million tons (MT), reflecting a 34.20% increase from 97.665 MT during the same period last year.
December 2024 alone saw coal production surge to 18.40 MT, with a daily average production of 0.594 MT, a 30.75% increase compared to December 2023’s daily average of 0.445 MT.
Coal dispatch figures were equally remarkable, with December 2024 witnessing the highest-ever monthly dispatch of 17.67 MT, representing a 33.20% increase from December 2023’s daily average dispatch of 0.426 MT. The total dispatch from April 1 to December 31, 2024, stood at 137.34 MT, a 33.95% increase from 102.53 MT during the same period last year.
These milestones reflect the coal sector’s growing efficiency and its capacity to meet the rising demand for energy across the nation. Enhanced coal production and dispatch are expected to strengthen India’s energy security, reduce reliance on imports, and fuel economic development.
The Ministry of Coal reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable growth, emphasizing its alignment with the government’s vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. This initiative aims to transform India into a developed nation by 2047, with the coal sector playing a pivotal role in ensuring sustainable energy availability and supporting industrial progress.
