IIT Madras Sees Remarkable Surge in Patent Activity

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has experienced a significant surge in patent activity, marking a doubling in patents granted during the 2023 calendar year. This noteworthy achievement underscores the institution’s commitment to pioneering research and innovation. This Notification was published on 23.02.2024.

In a recent announcement, IIT Madras revealed that the number of patents granted soared to 300 in 2023, up from 156 in the previous year, showcasing a remarkable growth trajectory. Moreover, the tally of international patents filed, including those secured under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), witnessed a substantial increase to 105 during 2023, compared to 58 in the preceding year. It is noteworthy to mention that as of December 2023, a total of 221 patents have already been filed in the current fiscal year, comprising 163 Indian Patents and 63 International patent applications (including PCT). This underscores the institution’s ongoing dedication to fostering innovation and protecting intellectual property. Since its inception, IIT Madras has amassed a total of 2,550 IP applications, including patents, both domestically (1,800) and internationally (750). Out of these, 1,100 have been registered IPs/granted patents, encompassing 900 Indian patents and 200 international patents. The Director of IIT Madras extended congratulations to the faculty, researchers, and students for their groundbreaking and translational research efforts. Emphasizing the significance of safeguarding ideas, especially as India progresses towards its centennial year of Independence, he highlighted the pivotal role of intellectual property protection in the nation’s journey towards becoming a global powerhouse.

According to a press release, researchers at IIT Madras are continuously generating intellectual property across various domains, including wireless networks, advanced materials, robotics, additive manufacturing technology, engine advancements, and other emerging technologies. The Director also commended the contributions of the Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research (ICSR) unit, which plays a vital role in facilitating intellectual property management and technology transfer initiatives. The ICSR at IIT Madras serves as a central hub for coordinating various aspects related to intellectual property and technology transfer. Collaborating closely with faculty, researchers, and students, it provides comprehensive support and houses a dedicated Legal Cell to ensure the effective management and protection of intellectual assets.
