Himachal Pradesh Extends One-Time Waiver for Motor Vehicle Tax on Scrapped Vehicles

On January 1st 2025, the Government of Himachal Pradesh has issued a notification extending the period for a one-time waiver on Motor Vehicle Tax (Token/Road Tax), Special Road Tax, and associated interest and penalties for vehicles that are scrapped at a Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF).

This waiver, which applies to vehicles being scrapped under the Motor Vehicles (Registration and Functions of Vehicles Scrapping Facility) Rules, 2021, is aimed at encouraging vehicle owners to dispose of their old and unfit vehicles in an environmentally responsible manner.

Key Details of the Notification:

Extended Waiver Period: The waiver of taxes, interest, and penalties has been extended and will now be valid until 31st March 2026.

Eligibility for Waiver: The waiver is applicable to vehicle owners who choose to scrap their old vehicles at a Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF), as per the guidelines under the 2021 Motor Vehicles rules.

Objective: The initiative is designed to help vehicle owners dispose of their old vehicles by offering financial incentives, thus contributing to the reduction of pollution and the improvement of road safety.

Extension of Notification: This notification serves as a partial modification of the previous notification issued on 9th February 2024 and is applicable under the powers conferred by Section 14(3) of the Himachal Pradesh Motor Vehicle Taxation Act, 1972.
