Health Ministry issues revised clinical management protocols

The Ministry of Health and Family welfare on 15th June 2020 has published the revised clinical management protocol for COVID-19 which provides for the management of COVID-19 cases based on the clinical severity of mild, moderate or severe and for allowing use of antiviral drug Remdesivir in moderate cases.

Under the revised protocol the ministry has advised the use of the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine in the early course of the disease and it has been stated that the drug has demonstrated in vitro activity against SARS-CoV2 and was shown to be clinically beneficial in several small single center studies though with significant limitations.

Further, the drug, administered in the form of injection, should be given at a dose of 200 mg on day one followed by 100 mg daily for five days, and as per the revised protocol, convalescent plasma therapy may be considered for patients with moderate illness with no improvement in condition.
