Health and Cleanliness in Focus: The Ministry of Textiles Leads the Way

The Ministry of Textiles (MoT) on September 27th 2024 notified regarding the implementation of cleanliness drives, health checkups, and waste management initiatives under Swachhata Hi Seva 2024.

Health Checkup Camps for Safai Mitras

Recognizing the critical role of Safai Mitras (cleaning workers) in maintaining cleanliness, the National Textiles Corporation (NTC) organized a “Safai Mitra Suraksha Shivir” health checkup camp. This initiative aimed not only to ensure the health and wellbeing of these essential workers but also to show appreciation for their hard work. Similarly, the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel School of Textile and Management arranged a health checkup camp, emphasizing the importance of health in maintaining a clean work environment.

Innovative Waste Management Initiatives

Effective waste management is a cornerstone of cleanliness efforts, and the office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) has taken proactive steps in this direction. They initiated a rigorous cleanliness drive both inside and outside office premises. A noteworthy aspect of this initiative is the introduction of color-coded bins: red for wet waste and green for dry waste. This strategic approach not only simplifies waste segregation but also educates employees on the significance of proper waste disposal.

In addition to segregating waste, the Jute Corporation of India focused on cleaning public areas and water bodies, further enhancing the community’s environment. These activities underscore the importance of collective efforts in achieving a cleaner society.

Creative Engagement through Art

The office of the Development Commissioner (Handlooms) took a unique approach to sustainability by conducting ‘Waste to Art Installations’. Collaborating with field offices, including Weavers’ Service Centres and the Indian Institute of Handloom Technology, they created murals, sculptures, and decorative items from waste materials. This initiative not only promotes cleanliness but also showcases the potential for creativity in repurposing waste, inspiring others to think innovatively about sustainability.

Workshops for Health and Wellbeing

The Cotton Corporation of India organized a workshop focused on the health and wellbeing of Safai Mitras, recognizing the need for education and awareness regarding their vital role. Such workshops serve to empower these workers, equipping them with knowledge to maintain their health while performing their essential duties.

Active Participation Across the Textile Sector

The involvement of various Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) has been remarkable. The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) actively participated by weeding out files, contributing to a decluttered and efficient workspace. Meanwhile, employees from the Central Cottage Industries Corporation of India Ltd. took part in a widespread cleanliness drive, including Shramdaan (voluntary labor) at Bunkar Colony, reflecting a strong community spirit.

Conclusion

The ‘Swachhata Hi Seva 2024’ campaign by the Ministry of Textiles exemplifies a comprehensive approach to environmental sustainability and health awareness. Through a blend of health initiatives, waste management practices, and community engagement, the Ministry is not just advocating for cleanliness but is also instilling a culture of responsibility and innovation among its employees and the wider community.
