Gypsum based Building Materials (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2024

The Central Government has issued the Gypsum-Based Building Materials (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2024, to provide a grace period for manufacturers and importers to comply with the quality control standards for gypsum-based building materials. This notification was published on November 25, 2024.

Key Points of the Amendment

Manufacturers and importers who have obtained certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) or have applied for certification before the commencement of the amendment order will be allowed to sell or display their existing stock of gypsum-based building materials for up to six months.

These manufacturers and importers must submit a declaration to the Central Government, certified by a Chartered Accountant, confirming their intention to sell the existing stock within the specified timeframe.

A limited quantity of gypsum-based building materials (up to 200 pieces per year) can be imported for research and development purposes by manufacturers. These imported materials must not be sold commercially and must be disposed of as scrap.

The amendment aims to balance the need for quality control with the practical challenges faced by manufacturers and importers. It provides a reasonable transition period for businesses to comply with the new standards while ensuring that consumers continue to have access to quality building materials.
