Govt of Chhattisgarh Declared “Controlled Area” for Equine Animals to Combat Glanders Disease

The Government of Chhattisgarh on January 3rd 2025 issued a notification in a move to control and eradicate the spread of Glanders disease in the region, the State Government has declared the Dhamtari Municipal Corporation area as a “controlled area” for equine animals for the next three months.

The decision, made in accordance with the powers granted under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009, is aimed at preventing the spread of this potentially dangerous disease.

Details of the Declaration:

  • Controlled Area Status: The area within the Dhamtari Municipal Corporation is now officially a “controlled area” for equine species (such as horses, donkeys, and mules).
  • Prohibition on Animal Movement: As part of the control measures, the movement of equine animals within the Dhamtari Municipal Corporation area is strictly prohibited for the next three months.

This action has been taken to prevent the transmission of Glanders, a highly infectious and contagious disease that primarily affects horses, mules, and donkeys but can also be transmitted to humans in rare cases.

Objective of the Action:

The primary objective of declaring the area as a “controlled area” is to limit the spread of Glanders disease by enforcing strict control measures, including movement restrictions on equine animals, and to ensure public and animal health safety.

The implementation of these measures is in line with the State Government’s commitment to maintaining the health and safety of both animals and the public from infectious diseases like Glanders.
