Govt Declares Aluminum, Bauxite as Public Services

On February 27th 2025 , the Ministry of Labour and Employment has declared industries involved in the manufacturing of alumina and aluminum, and the mining of bauxite as public utility services. This decision will be effective for six months from the publication date in the Official Gazette.

Key Points:

  • The declaration is made under Section 2(n)(vi) of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947.

  • It applies to industries engaged in manufacturing alumina and aluminum and mining bauxite.

  • This classification means that any industrial dispute in these sectors will be subject to regulation under the Industrial Disputes Act.

  • The move is aimed at protecting public interest by ensuring smooth functioning of these vital industries.

Previously, the government had made a similar declaration for a six-month period, starting August 2, 2024, but the designation could not be extended. Now, the Central Government has concluded that it is essential to continue this classification to maintain stability in these key sectors.

The industries involved are crucial to the national economy, supporting sectors such as construction, energy, and manufacturing. The new declaration ensures that strikes or industrial disputes in these areas will be restricted or regulated, minimizing any disruptions to these essential services.

This action reflects the government’s commitment to public interest and economic stability, ensuring uninterrupted operation of critical industries for India’s growth.
