Government Promotes Nano Fertilizer Use Among Farmers

The Indian government is promoting the use of nano fertilizers among farmers through a variety of initiatives. These efforts aim to increase awareness, demonstrate the benefits of nano fertilizers, and facilitate their adoption. This press release was issued on February 7, 2025.

Promotional Activities

The government is using a multi-pronged approach to promote nano urea, including:

  1. Awareness campaigns
  2. Webinars
  3. Street plays
  4. Field demonstrations
  5. Farmer gatherings
  6. Informative films in regional languages

Availability and Supply

Nano urea and nano DAP are readily available at Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samridhi Kendras (PMKSKs). Nano urea has also been included in the Department of Fertilizers’ monthly supply plan.

National Campaigns and Initiatives

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), through the Indian Institute of Soil Science, Bhopal organized a national campaign on the “Efficient and Balanced Use of Fertilizer (including Nano-fertilizers).” Nano fertilizer promotion was also integrated into the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra (VBSY), launched on November 15, 2023.

Facilitating Application

To make foliar application of nano urea easier, initiatives like drone spraying and the distribution of battery-operated sprayers at retail points are being undertaken. Pilot training and custom hiring spraying services through Village Level Entrepreneurs are also actively promoted.

Collaborative Campaigns

The Department of Fertilizers (DoF), in collaboration with fertilizer companies, has launched a “Maha Abhiyan” for nano DAP adoption in all 15 agro-climatic zones of the country. They have also launched a campaign for field-level demonstrations and awareness programs for nano urea plus in 100 districts.

Incentives and Production

Currently, there are no direct subsidies for nano fertilizers. There is no current proposal to include nano fertilizer production under any Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. However, the DoF is encouraging its companies to establish nano fertilizer plants.

Drone Spraying

Drone spraying of nano fertilizers has emerged as a cost-effective application method. Farmers showed significant interest in adopting this technology during the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra.

Overall Goal

These initiatives reflect the government’s focus on promoting advanced and efficient fertilizer use. By raising awareness, improving accessibility, and supporting innovative application methods, the government hopes to encourage wider adoption of nano fertilizers, potentially leading to increased agricultural productivity and improved soil health.
