Government on High Alert Amidst Resurgence of Mpox in Africa

In view of the recent surge in Mpox cases in Africa, the Indian government has stepped up its preparedness measures. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has issued a press release on the measures in place to combat the spread of the disease. This press release was dated August 18, 2024.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Mpox Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on August 14, 2024 in view of its prevalence and spread across many parts of Africa.

In India, a high-level meeting chaired by Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister assessed the country’s readiness to combat the disease. While India has reported only 30 cases since the 2022 WHO declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), the government remains vigilant given the increasing number of cases in Africa.

The Health Ministry had issued a communicable disease alert, sensitized airport health teams, and conducted a video conference with state health authorities to strengthen surveillance and response capabilities. A network of 32 laboratories is equipped for testing, and protocols for prevention and treatment are being widely disseminated.

The ministry has emphasized the importance of early detection, isolation, and contact tracing to prevent the spread of Mpox. Healthcare providers have been advised to be alert to the signs and symptoms of the disease.
