Government of Mizoram Declares Closed Season for River Conservation

The Government of Mizoram on October 11th 2024 notified regarding the Conservation of rivers during the closed season

As per the provisions of The Mizoram Fisheries Act, 2002, a closed season has been declared, effective from October 10 to December 10, 2024. This measure aims to provide a safe environment for our aquatic life, ensuring they can breed without disruption.

Closed Season Duration:


The closed season will last for two months, from October 10 to December 10, 2024.

Protected Species:


During this period, the following indigenous fish species will be protected:

  • Nghalim
  • Nghadawl
  • Lengphar (which includes Garra, Danio, and Barilius species)

Scope of Protection:


This initiative applies to all rivers and streams across Mizoram, with the exception of the three Autonomous District Council areas.

Consequences of Violations:


Violating this closed season can lead to serious penalties, including:

  • Imprisonment: One month, potentially extending to three months
  • Fine: ₹5,000 or both
