The Government of Meghalaya on October 16th 2024 released the official holiday list for the year 2025, outlining the general, local, special, and restricted holidays for government offices, revenue and magisterial courts, and educational institutions across the state.
The Governor of Meghalaya has declared a set of general holidays for the state’s government offices and revenue and magisterial courts in 2025. These holidays are typically observed on major national or state celebrations, though specific dates have not been provided in the announcement. These holidays will apply to most government functions across Meghalaya.
Local Holidays: Customizing Holidays for Districts
In addition to the general holidays, local holidays have been granted more flexibility. The Deputy Commissioners of each district in Meghalaya are authorized to declare up to three local holidays within their respective jurisdictions during 2025. However, there is an exception for the East Khasi Hills District, where the State Government in the General Administration Department (GAD[A]) will announce the local holidays.
Local holidays can be declared for a variety of events, including:
- 53rd Garo Labour Corps Day
- Shad Suk Mynsiem
- Unitarian Anniversary Day
- Shad Nongkrom
- Any other festival of local significance
This provision ensures that local customs and regional celebrations are acknowledged, allowing communities to celebrate important events that may not be observed statewide.
Special Holidays: Rev. Thomas Jones Day
A special holiday has been declared on June 22, 2025, for the following districts in Meghalaya:
- East Khasi Hills District
- South West Khasi Hills District
- West Khasi Hills District
- East Jaintia Hills District
- West Jaintia Hills District
- Eastern West Khasi Hills District
- Ri-Bhoi District
This holiday is specifically for the celebration of Rev. Thomas Jones Day, commemorating the missionary who played a key role in the development of the Khasi language and culture. On this day, all state government offices, revenue and magisterial courts, and educational institutions in the listed districts will be closed.
Restricted Holidays: Flexibility for Employees
In addition to the fixed holidays mentioned above, employees will also have the option to choose two restricted holidays from a provided list. This gives government employees more flexibility in selecting holidays that are personally significant to them, beyond the regular and special holidays.
Holidays Under the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881
Further, as per the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881, specific public holidays are declared for the state of Meghalaya in 2025. These holidays typically include key national observances, such as Republic Day and Independence Day, ensuring that there is uniformity in holiday observance across the state.
