Government Mandates Weekly Wheat Stock Declaration to Ensure Food Security

In a move aimed at safeguarding overall food security and preventing unscrupulous speculation, the Government of India has announced a mandatory weekly declaration of wheat stock for various entities across all States and Union Territories. This press release was issued on March 25, 2025.

The directive requires traders, wholesalers, retailers, big chain retailers, and processors to report their wheat stock position on a designated online portal. This directive will be effective from April 1, 2025.

Mandatory Weekly Reporting

All concerned legal entities are required to declare their wheat stock on the online portal. This declaration must be made every Friday thereafter, until further notice. The government emphasizes that all respective entities must ensure that their stock information is disclosed regularly and accurately on the portal.

It is important to note that the existing wheat stock limits for all categories of entities across all States and Union Territories will expire on March 31, 2025. Following this, the mandatory weekly declaration of wheat stock on the portal will come into effect.

Any entity that is not yet registered on the designated portal is advised to register immediately to comply with the new reporting requirements. Once registered, these entities must begin disclosing their wheat stock every Friday.

The Department of Food and Public Distribution will closely monitor the wheat stock position across the country. This measure is being implemented to prevent any speculative activities, control wheat prices, and ensure the easy availability of this essential commodity for consumers.

This directive seeks to aid in the maintenance of food security and price stability in the country. Regular and transparent reporting of wheat stocks, helps furthering a clear understanding of the market situation and taking proactive measures if any irregularities or speculative practices are detected.

This initiative is expected to benefit both consumers by ensuring the availability of wheat at reasonable prices and the overall stability of the food market.
