Government Extends Free Import Policy for Tur Until March 31, 2026

The Indian government has announced an extension of the free import policy for Tur/Pigeon Peas (Cajanus Cajan) until March 31, 2026. This decision aims to ensure continued stable supplies and moderate prices of this essential pulse crop in the domestic market. This notification was published on January 22, 2025.

Pulses are a vital source of protein in the Indian diet, and Tur/Pigeon Peas are a particularly important variety. The free import policy helps bridge any gap between domestic production and consumption, contributing to price stability.

Previously, under the Existing Policy, Tur/Pigeon Peas imports were allowed duty-free until March 31, 2025. Now, by the present notification, free import policy has now been extended for an additional year, until March 31, 2026.

Policy Impact

This extension is expected to:

  1. Facilitate continued import of Tur/Pigeon Peas to meet domestic demand.
  2. Help stabilize Tur/Pigeon Peas prices in the Indian market.

This notification is issued under the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992, and aligns with the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023.

Importance for Consumers

The free import policy extension is a positive step for Indian consumers. It should help ensure the availability of Tur/Pigeon Peas at reasonable prices.
